What is "intellectual property"?

“Intellectual property” refers to specific creations of the mind (musical, literary, and artistic works; discoveries and inventions; and words, phrases, symbols, and designs) for which a set of exclusive rights are recognized.
In the United States, “intellectual property” refers specifically to:
  1. Patents;
  2. Trademarks;
  3. Copyrights; and
  4. Trade Secrets.
