What is a "Markush claim"?

11/26/2016

A Markush claim is a specialized claim format primarily used in chemical and biological inventions.  The Markush claim includes a claim element selected from a group of possibilities, for example "...where R is a radical selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, and E."  Markush groups are typically used when there is no generic term that conveniently describes the desired claim element.
