What is a "continuing application"?

11/7/2016

A "continuing application" is a generalized term referring to any divisional, continuation, or continuation-in-part (CIP) application.  These applications typically claim the priority date of the parent application, and also serve to "keep the ball in the air."  That is to say, in order to file additional continuation applications claiming priority all the way back to the parent, each link in the chain of applications must be valid and at least one application in the chain must not have issued or have gone abandoned.
