The power of amicus briefs

12/30/2016

Amici curiae filings (meaning: "friends of the court") are briefs that any citizen or corporation can seek to submit in order to help the court make a decision. The briefs can express the views, interests, and considerations of third parties. To strengthen the effectiveness of amicus briefs, some have recommended employing a high-profile attorney to author them (e.g., companies frequently hire former Solicitors General). Additionally, clients can strengthen the effectivenes of amicus briefs by grouping together to submit a single brief that represents a professional organization, trade group, or a set of business entities with a common interest in the outcome of the litigation.
