What is the appropriate way to search for design patents at the USPTO?

9/22/2017

Use an advanced search.

appft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/search-adv.html

Then you should use "apt/4" to search by application type (4 means: design).  This approach will give you a more comprehensive result set than merely entering "d" in the patent number field.
